4       Smoke Sreen The play presents the generation the older and the younger generation.Susan ,a woman of fifty ,lives with her sister Lucy.Prim Rose is Lucy s daughter.She visits night clubs with her male friends.Susan tries to prevent her from her over much liberal activities. Lucy,a divorced woman of forty,has somewhat liberal views and approves of her daughter s independence. Prim Rose is about to leave for club but Susan hides her bag so as to prevent her from going to club. L ucy favours her daughter s free movements.Prim Rose decides to marry an ugly footballer,John.Lucy is shocked at first but later allows her to marry John. The three major character s in the play ,represent three different vies points about life.Susan represents the rigid and conservative view.Lucy is for flexible and liberal view.Prim Rose represents the most modern attitude. Play.no 3 . Something to Talk About. The play depicts the psychological treatment of crimes.The play shows how the Sydneys behave with the burglar,Wolf.They try to be friendly with him.Instead of making resistence,they try to ward off the burglary by playing psychological and delaying tactics. In the play we see that Wolf is fumbling with the safe to steal christmas gifts.Guy Sydney by chance and tries to interrupt him.Wolf makes him hands off but later allows him to serve him  soda water.The whole family gathers there and assist the burglar in the act of robbery.Sydeny poses to be very simple and straightforward just to make his family pitiable.Lettice,the young sister of Guy Sydeny,also enters there and tries to be intimate with Wolf but he is bent on breaking the safe.He also asks for the pass word but the Sydenys keep on putting him off to ward off the robbery.At last he takes the pass word and is able to break open the safe. Lordredchester plays his trump card by tempting Wolf...

The Boy comes Home This play brings out a universal theme i.e the problem of generation gap.It also shows that the use of power can not settle the conflict between the two generations.The elders usually try to supress the young generation by the use of force and purse power but they have to yield to the demands of the young generation. 1_The Bear The Bear is a farce.It is full of humour and rony from the beginning to the end.Popova s pretended mourning and tall claims of loyalty are humorous and ironical.The play brings out the hypocrisy and inconstancy of the softer sex. When the play begins,we find Popova in a mourning mood.She looks at the photograph of her late husband and avows to continue mourning till death.Luka,her old servant tries to convince her to cease mourning but she reiterates her decision of  mourning. Short Story no.10 The Duchess and the Jeweller This story is a criticism on the on the moral and economic bankruptcy of the aristocracy of the time.It also points out how the commoners were rising in their social and economic life. The Duchess in the story represents the elite class.She has fallen from prosperity to adversity.Her economic bankruptcy is due to her gambling and drinking.She steals pearls from her husband and sells them in the market for gambling.She has deve loped intimacy with the jeweller to sell false pearls. Short Story no.9 .The Necklace The story is a criticism on the false pretentions,artificialities and snobbish attitude of the modern man.The writer has presented a poor girl Matilda who is married to a clerk but she dreams of high living.She is dissatisfied with her present economic and social conditions.She happens to borrow a necklace from her rich friend to participate in a ball.She cuts a fine figure in the party and feels elated.On her return ,she finds that she has lost  the necklace.As a result the husband and wife borrow a huge amount of money and buy a diamond necklace to replace the lost necklace.They have to undergo extreme sufferings and physical labour to repay the loan.They are able to pay off the debt in the period of ten years but they become old and rough .In the end it is discovered that Forestier s necklace was the fake one and it was worth 400 francs only.This discovery further adds to the agony of the Loisel s as they had wasted the precious time of their y...

The Tell Tale Heart This story describes the cold blooded murder of an old man.The Narrator of the story himself is the killer.He killed an old man just for his deep psychological aversion to the old man s eye.The old man s eye resembled that of vulture.It had a pale blue film over it.The narrator was allergic to his ugly eye.So he decided to close that eye for ever.He murdered the old man and chopped his body into pieces and deposited these pieces under the  wooden floor of his room. Some neighbour informed the police on hearing the shriek of the old man.The police party came to his house to investigate the matter.He satisfied the police by his clever tricks.In the meantime his heart beat became fast.He could hear the ringing noise in his ears.The ringing became more distinct.At length he confessed his crime pressed by the voice of pricking conscience.
