Novel.Q#8 Symbolism of the novel .Ans.1 Manolin: The boy manolin had been with Santiago since his childhood .He had taught him the art of fishing.Manolin helped Santiago in his fishing preparations.He brought him coffee and beer from the Terrace.In short,he provided him the much needed company in his lonliness.Santiago had not been able to catch any fish for eighty four days.Therefore the boy,s parents had sent him to another boat.Santiago missed Manolin very much .When Santiago fished alone in the sea ,the boy remained in his ideas.thoughts of Manolin were a medicine for his sadness.By remembring Manolin,Santiago infact remembered his own youthful energetic past .Manolin was a symbol of his own youth.2.Baseball: Santiago often talked to himself about the baseball tournaments and the baseball champion,Di Maggie.While struggling with the Marlin in his boat,he thought of the results of the matches.
