Story no 6.The Happy Prince
This is a fairy tale as all its characters and incidents are not life like.The statue of the prince and the swallow have been presented as thinking and feeling human beings.They are the personified form of charity,love and fellow feelings.
They serve humanity at the cost of their personal beauty and life.The statue becomes ugly and dull and the swallow too gives his life for the service of humanity.
First of all,they help a poor washer woman whose child is lying ill with fever but she has nothing to give him except river water.
secondly,they help a young playwright who wants to finish his play but hunger and cold have made him faint.
Thirdly,they help a match girl whose matches have fallen into a gutter and she is crying at this loss.Her father would beat her if she does not bring some money.
The story preaches the lesson that love and charity are the greatest virtues.God orders the angels to bring the dead body of the swallow and the lead heart of the prince to His paradise and they are appreciated to the full.The Happy Prince rightly says that there is no mystry as great as misery.The service of suffering humanity is the greatest act in the eye of God.
