This story is a criticism on the on the moral and economic bankruptcy of the aristocracy of the time.It also points out how the commoners were rising in their social and economic life.
The Duchess in the story represents the elite class.She has fallen from prosperity to adversity.Her economic bankruptcy is due to her gambling and drinking.She steals pearls from her husband and sells them in the market for gambling.She has developed intimacy with the jeweller to sell false pearls.
The Jeweller,Bacon,on the other hand ,is a self made man.He represents the lower working class who were rising socially and economically.He used to sell stolen dogs in his childhood.Gradually he became the richest jeweller of London.
when for the last time,the Duchess comes to him to sell her fake pearls,he refuses to buy them without testing their purity.The Duchess plays her last trump and offers to come to her estate and enjoy riding with her daughter Diana.The jeweller at once accepts her false pearls and pay her twenty thousand dollars.In fact the jeweller was enamoured of Diana and he sacrificed this heavy amount to merry making with Diana.
The story points out that love is a basic human weakness .That is why the jeweller is allured by the very image of Diana and is ready to accept false pearls.
