The play presents the generation the older and the younger generation.Susan ,a woman of fifty ,lives with her sister Lucy.Prim Rose is Lucy s daughter.She visits night clubs with her male friends.Susan tries to prevent her from her over much liberal activities.
Lucy,a divorced woman of forty,has somewhat liberal views and approves of her daughter s independence.
Prim Rose is about to leave for club but Susan hides her bag so as to prevent her from going to club.
Lucy favours her daughter s free movements.Prim Rose decides to marry an ugly footballer,John.Lucy is shocked at first but later allows her to marry John.
The three major character s in the play ,represent three different vies points about life.Susan represents the rigid and conservative view.Lucy is for flexible and liberal view.Prim Rose represents the most modern attitude.
The title of the play is symbolic.All the three characters hide their real self under the smoke screen of pretensions.
Susan pretends to be virtuous but she has been vulgar in her youth.Lucy is shocked at her daughter s choice of an ugly footballer but she was sick of her own charming husband.
The play is a social comedy.The writer wants to say that the young generation should have freedom of choosing their life partners.
