Popova promises to pay him the money the day after tomorrow .She requests Smirnov to excuse her that day. She says that she has not any spare cash that day. Explanation: Smirnov criticizes all women in a general and calls them unfaithful and inconstant.He says that it is impossible to find a fair and constant woman throughout  the  world. Smirnov has rightly criticized the fair women in Russian society .Popova,s herself proves inconstant and insincere.When Smirnov proposes her,she jumps at the offer.

Explanation: Criticizing the men ,Popova says that men are also unfaithful in love . She gives the example of her late husband .She says that her husband was unfaithful to her.

Context : Smirnov has lent 1200 Roubles to Popova,s late husband.Now he has come to Popova to recieve his debt .He is wearing ordinary clothes and Popova rebukes him as she takes him for a vagabond. Explanation: These lines are spoken by Smirnov .He comes to Popova,s house to get his money which he has lent to her late husband .He is not given a cordial welcome.He thinks that she is not behaving well with him because he is not wearing fine clothes .Then he says that there is no special dress for the creditors .If there had been a special dress for the creditors,he would have worn that dress.

Context: Popova refuses to pay the money to Smirnov .They exchange hot words and come to fight a dual .Popova asks Smirnov to teach her how to take aim . Explanation: When Popova and Smirnov decide to fight a dual Popova brings her husband,s pistols.Then she requests Smirnove to teach her how to fire a pistol. Popova was actually in love with Smirnov .She wanted to fight the game of love . She pretends that she has not held a pistol in her hands before. These lines uttered by Popova ,create a laughters as she is asking her supposed enemy to teach her how to fire a pistol . The logical outcome of this dual is that they both fall in love with each other.(the end)

These lines show that Smirnov is very frank and bold .His witty  replies are a source of humour.
