Novel Q# 4.Discuss "The Oldman and the Sea" as a tragedy.Ans."The Oldman and the Sea " is a tragedy because Santiago sufferd continuously and met a tragic death .In order to prove our point that the novel is a tragedy we will have to go into the definition of a tragedy.A tragedy is a story of exceptional suffering resulting in the death of the protagonist.During these sufferings the hero exhibits the highest qualities of nobility ,courage and patience.But he has some hamartia in his character which causes his downfall.Firstly ,we note that Santiago was a man of heroic qualities .He was nobel brave ,patient and able.He showed affection for Manolin and other creatures .He continued with his risky voyage bravely.He possesses the full knowledge of the art of boating and fishing .he faced the attacks of the sharks for many days with patience.He said" man is not meant for death".
[20/01 10:36 AM] Talha.u: He showed supreme heroism in bringing the Marlin to the coast .Secondly,we find hamartia in his character when we note that he went beyond the boundaries of his physical strenght .He had gone too far in the sea knowing his limitations .It was his tragic flaw which caused his tragic end .We can conclude the topic by saying that " The Oldman and the Sea" is a tragedy that establishes the victory of honest labour .It shows the power of character which is responsible for such spiritual achievements.( the end )
