Notes on Short Stories.
                1.The Killers.
This story is about two hirelings who enter a restaurant to kill Ole Anderson, a retired boxer who often come there to have his dinner.The two killers,Al and Max abruptly enter the lunch room and ask for a heavy dinner.They become furious when they find that heavy food is not available at this time.Their behaviour with the restaurant staff is highly impolite.Afterwards ,they agree to have light food.After having food,they tell the staff that they have come here to kill Ole Anderson.They reveal that they have no personal enmity with him.They do not know him.They have been deputed by someone to commit the murder.Luckily,Anderson does not come there and they leave the hotel without killing their victim.
The above story is full of horror and suspense from the beginning till the end.The reader is anxious about the fate of Ole Anderson and the restaurant staff.
This story throws light on the dark aspects of American society.The law and order situation in America is unsatisfactory.The two killers become the master of situation for two hours.Anderson s reaction to the killers shows that retired peole and the old are not looked after well.They are sick of their life due to insecurity and lack of filial live.That is why Ole Anderson is ready to accept death.
