1_The Bear
The Bear is a farce.It is full of humour and rony from the beginning to the end.Popova s pretended mourning and tall claims of loyalty are humorous and ironical.The play brings out the hypocrisy and inconstancy of the softer sex.
When the play begins,we find Popova in a mourning mood.She looks at the photograph of her late husband and avows to continue mourning till death.Luka,her old servant tries to convince her to cease mourning but she reiterates her decision of mourning.
Luka,a rich landlord enters and demands the money her late husband has taken from him.She refuses to pay hin the money as she is in mourning mood.She promises to pay the money ,the day after tomorrow but Smirniv insists on having his money there and then.
In the end both decide to fight a duel.They go into the garden .Smirnov offers her to teach her how to fire.He catches hold of her hand and trains her how to take an aim.During this duel,they fall in love with each other and decide to marry.
