Story no.7.Araby

In this story James Joyce brings out the conflict between the ideal and the real world. The story revolves round a boy of school going age and his romantic illusions. He falls in love with his friend s sister. He follows her when she goes to school. He is lost in her thoughts day and night. One day the girl asks her if he has seen Araby, the splendid bazar of the city.He at once promises to go to Araby and bring some gifts for her.He is living in his uncle s house. He asks his uncle to give him some money to visit the bazar. His uncle gives him some money and he leaves for the bazar in a deserted train. When he reaches the bazar, most of the shops had been closed.Only a few stalls were still open.He cannot buy anything from there as he had not enough money. He returns from the bazar without buying any gift for his beloved.
All his dreama are shattered and he feels that his desires have made fun of him.
The story brings out that love is a natural passion which takes hold of adolescents. They begin to live in the world of wishful thinking. When they come face to face with the reality ,their dreams are shattered.
The story also points out that sometimes our economic conditions stand in the way of our love affairs.
