Short Story5.Take Pity.
This story depicts the heroic struggle of a widow named Eva.She is a woman of values and wants to stand on her own feet in the face of adverse circumstances.
She tries to run the store in order to support her her two young daughters.Her business fails time and again despite all her efforts.She and her two daughters have to undergo starvation and hunger.She does not beg or bow to any one.
She is dignified and self reliant woman.She does not want to be pitied by anyone.
Rosen ,a coffee sales man ,wants to help her and her two children.Perhaps he is in love with her. He adopts different ways to help her.First,he advises her to leave the store and settle somewhere else.Then he proposes her but she refuses.Secondly,he gives a piece of beef to the children but she does not like it.Thirdly,he sends her money under a fake name posing to be some friend of her late husband .She sends back the money.In the end he get a will prepared in which he gives all his belongings to Eva after his death.
He himself decides to commit suicide.In the meantime Eva comes to him extending her hand towards him.
The story points out the fact that it is impossible for women to live on their own in this male dominated society.
