2Plays.The Boy comes HomeThis play brings out a universal theme i.e the problem of generation gap.It also shows that the use of power can not settle the conflict between the two generations.The elders usually try to supress the young generation by the use of force and purse power but they have to yield to the demands of the young generation.
In this play Philip ,a young man of 23,represents the young generation.He is living with uncle James who is strict and rigid.James represents the older generation.He wants discipline,punctuality and obedience.Philip is a carefree person and wants to be his own master.James wants to make him obey by using the power of purse.He is guardian of Philip untill he reaches the age of 25.
Philip rises late and asks for breakfast at 10a.m.Mrs.Higgins,the head cook ,refuses to serve him breakfast as it was order of James to clear away breakfast at 8.a.m.Philip smokes cigarettes but James object to it.James wants Philip to join his jam business but Philip wants to be a lawyer.Philip demands his money to operate his own money but James refuses.
James has a dream in which he sees that Philip brings out a pistol and a bomb from his pockets and aims at James.James is frightened and begs for his life.
This dream scene brings a sudden change in James, behaviour and he at once becomes flexible and agreeable.
So the dream scene changes the end of the play.The conflict between James and Philip is peacefully resolved.
